restaurant review: Mochica
(Tuesday night, with visiting
mrissa and
timprov in addition to the usual suspects.)
This is Peruvian cuisine yanked in the nouvelle direction, to its general detriment IMHO. It loses points for the almost total lack of capsicin-free foodstuffs suitable for
papersky, and more points for a waily handwave about "oh, Peruvian cuisine uses lots of peppers", which is provably untrue to the extent that they implemented it, as there are plenty of capsicin-free options in Villa Wellington. Offering to make more things without peppers if called in advance next time is a plus, but not an over-riding one.
I was the only party member to have a starter, which was in the direction of Villa Wellington's papa rellena save made with yucca and stuffed with seafood and cheese, and gratuitously containing a tiny dash of pepper; pleasant if a mite too small.
Mains: llama for
papersky, with various toxic side-dishes, one mouthful of which was quite nice but nothing to seek out IMO. Grouper on yucca for me, limey and mildly peppered and quite good, though half a notch hotter than my ideal, with quinoa on the side which reminded me how much I like things in the couscous direction, which I keep forgetting to think of. Scallops on a bed of quinoay limey risottoy thing for
mrissa, from my tastes, OK scallops, interestingly peculiar and rather more-ish quasi-couscous.
zorinth and
timprov both had what I think was lamb done in very much the style of Villa Wellington's seco con frijoles, rather good.
For dessert we retreated to Suite 88, which was a good plan.
Also, graphic erotic sculptures in the bathrooms, not to my mind a plus, even if they do come from the appropriate culture.
